London - The hotel and The Trooping of the Color

June 14,  2014

Drove to London, dropped off the car at the airport and amazingly found our way via the underground to Earl's Court and Henley House where we are staying until June 18.  Our room at Henley House was such a comfort after the place in Cornwall.  All very modern, wonderful bed and bathroom.  We arrived in the afternoon, very tired from the journey, and watched the trooping of the color shown on the enormous television set.  The following photos were taken by Mike directly from the TV.  It was like actually being there!

  • Since 1748, this parade has marked the Sovereign's official birthday. From the reign of Edward VII onwards, the Sovereign has taken the salute in person at Trooping the Color. During the ceremony, The Queen is greeted by a Royal salute and carries out an inspection of the troops.
  • Although the Queen was born on April 21, it has long been the tradition to celebrate the Queen's birthday publicly on a summer day, when it is likely to be better weather.
This year she turned 88 years old. Wearing a powder blue dress designed by Angela Kelly, The Queen was joined by her husband The Duke of Edinburgh.
The ceremony, which takes place on Horse Guards Parade, a short distance from Buckingham Palace, was attended by The Duchess of Cornwall, the Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry along with other members of the Royal household, whilst The Prince of Wales, Duke of Cambridge and Princess Royal took part in the ceremony.
Trooping the Color is carried out by fully trained and operational troops from the Household Division (Foot Guards and Household Cavalry). This year, the Color was trooped by Nijmegen Company, Grenadier Guards and was followed by a fly-past by the Royal Air Force. Thousands of spectators gathered to watch the traditional parade which involves more than 1000 soldiers and horses.
