The London Mile

June 15, 2014

On a very bleak, overcast day, we went to the new Tate Museum and Millennium Bridge.  At St. Paul's we met John who told us a lot about the history of the London Mile (old London).

It was Sunday, and the Mile was mostly deserted, so a good time to get a a good look at the area.  8,000 people live there but 350,000 arrive every work day.

We joined the Shakespeare/Dickens walk with Andrew and walked through all the places with literary association, or the actual buildings where Shakespeare or Dickens lived or worked.

The Priory Church of St Bartholomew the Great, sometimes abbreviated to Great St Bart's, is an Anglican church in West Smithfield within the City of London. The building was originally founded as an Augustinian priory in 1123 and adjoins St Bartholomew's Hospital of the same foundation.

A very empty Smithfield Market

Remnants of the ancient City wall

I wish I'd kept better notes of this tour.  I was so fascinated by Andrew's descriptions of the past, I forgot to keep writing!  Enough said that London oozes history and there's a tale to tell of practically every stone in the City.
